How Does an Incinerator Work in Cremation?
- Preparation: Before cremation, certain items, such as pacemakers or medical devices, are removed to prevent hazardous reactions. The body is then placed in a combustible container, which aids in the cremation process.
- Loading: The container is loaded into the cremation chamber, also known as the retort. This chamber is preheated to a temperature ranging from 800°C to 1,200°C. The high heat ensures the efficient breakdown of organic materials.
- Combustion: Once inside, the body undergoes combustion. The intense heat vaporizes soft tissues and reduces the body to bone fragments. This process typically takes between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on factors like body size and the efficiency of the incinerator.
- Cooling and Processing: After combustion, the remaining bone fragments are allowed to cool. They are then processed, often using a machine called a cremulator, to reduce them to a fine, sand-like consistency. These processed remains are what families receive as the “ashes.”
